[what's up, sora! that execution sure was something, wasn't it. once people have dispersed and had some time to chill out a bit, yona goes looking for him.]

Hey, Sora, can I ask you something?

[here they are outside and sora looks back from where he's walking, stopping so yona can approach.]

Yeah. Is everything okay?

I think so, but... when I was talking to Kano yesterday, he asked me to go look for something he buried, near the bear's den. He said you knew where it was - I was hoping you could show me?

[reconnective]

[he tilts his head.]

Yeah. Sure. It's not too far from here and the bear shouldn't bother us if we don't go in the den. Did he say what it was?

He didn't say what it was - just that it was buried behind it.

[onward they go, then!]

Sounds like Kano. [onward.] And sure, no problem.

So...you went to see him last night, too?

...did he open up to you at all? About anything?

...a little, I think. But I didn't try to push him to tell me too much that he didn't want to. I think I learned more that way than I did any other way. You?

But... he asked me to look after what he buried, so - I want to do at least that much for him, since we... got things so wrong yesterday.

[which, speaking of! they're behind the bear den now. yona's looking for the telltale signs of disturbed earth to figure out where to start digging.]

If this is his arm, I swear...[it's grumbled a little, but they're walking through the forest and sora comes to a slope. below them is the bear cave, but he starts looking around near the top, too, just in case.]

Can I ask you what he did tell you? Or is it too personal, you think?

...I don't know if I should repeat everything he said, but...

He said that he fought to protect somebody's memory. I'm not sure if he meant someone specific, or if he was just talking about somebody in general, but... I think it's worth keeping in mind, if anyone thinks he was... trying to cover for someone.

...[he hums to himself.] At the trial he said he didn't have anyone to protect that was here. So that's the difference, right?

It's...weird. I think we might've gotten more out of him if we talked to him a different way, but we didn't have time for that. He sounded like he was used to people giving up on him. He's never been great about being direct and I don't think he ever wanted to.

"...sometimes I can't help it. But the way I am... I know I gotta be this way. Even if I can't say what the reason is. I guess, in some way, I'm doing all this to feel real too."

...I still don't know if that was real or if it was something he said to get me to back off, but if it's true? I don't know if he knew how to handle what was happening here.

...we shouldn't have gotten so stuck on how suspicious his refusal to cooperate was. But - at the same time... I wish he'd just cooperated.

[she frowns, but spots a patch of earth that looks like it's been disturbed recently... time to dig.]

I wish we could have done something more for him. He told me this was something I could do... [finding the shit he buried, that is] ...but it doesn't feel like enough.

Me too. If he'd been a little easier to work with, maybe people wouldn't have freaked out so much and lost sight of what we were doing.

[...he'll just crouch nearby and let yona dig, curious what's out there.]

I wish we could have, too, but I think even taking care of his own wishes is enough for him. It means people are listening to him. [hm.] He asked me to take care of some stuff after he was gone, too.

Better late than never, but...it still shouldn't have gone like this. You're right.

[he blinks in surprise.] Think that's it?

izumo's kimono is in there. it's folded up nicely.]

...maybe? Unless she didn't want it, and that's why he had it in the first place?

She might've thrown it away but I don't know if she meant to get rid of it entirely. Izumo's funny that way.

Hmm... I guess I'll hold onto it until she says she wants it. Then I can give it back to her, but she doesn't have to deal with it if she doesn't want to.

That's probably all we can do. I don't know why Kano wanted us to find it, but...Izumo seemed to take his death pretty hard. Maybe he thought it would help her to have it back.

Maybe. It's really hard to understand what he was thinking... and it's not like I can ask him anymore.
